On Tuesday morning (AEST) 12 January 2010, the Caribbean nation of Haiti was struck by a massive 7.0-magnitude earthquake. It could be felt strongly in eastern Cuba, more than 200 miles away (BBC).
Much of the infrastructure has been destroyed including hospitals and roads. It is estimated that about 100,000 lives have been lost and possibly 3 million people – one third of Haiti’s population – have been affected according to the Red Cross. Thousands are in need of urgent medical attention but without hospitals and medical supplies, the situation is grim.
The Episcopal Relief and Development Agency (ERD) is the international relief and development agency of the Episcopal Church of the United States and have been working in Haiti. They have already disbursed emergency funding to the Diocese of Haiti.
The Anglican Board of Mission is accepting donations for the victims of the earthquake which will be sent to Haiti through ERD, our fellow Anglican partner, who are “committed to a long-term response and recovery effort” with “one of the largest and perhaps most socially engaged diocese of the Episcopal Church”.(ERD)
